On International Women’s Day, with this year’s theme “Accelerate Action,” we recognise the contributions of women making significant strides in trades and construction. Traditionally male-dominated, these sectors are seeing meaningful change, driven by skilled, determined women who are overcoming barriers and redefining industry norms.
At Early Birds, we’re proud to highlight some inspiring women who have generously shared their experiences. Their journeys offer valuable insights into the evolving trades landscape, showcasing the unique strengths and perspectives women bring to construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and beyond.
Meet a few of our close connections, women leading the way in Construction and Business.

Sharon Benjamin
As Founder and Financial Director of Early Birds Renovations Ltd, Sharon Benjamin is the driving force behind the company’s financial operations. Her journey in the construction industry is a testament to dedication, perseverance, and hands-on learning. Starting as a receptionist in a large construction company, she embraced every opportunity for growth, progressing into office administration, IT support, and office management roles.
Sharon’s financial expertise has been built through years of practical experience rather than formal training—demonstrating that determination and adaptability can be just as valuable as qualifications. Leading in a traditionally male-dominated industry, she takes great pride in what Early Birds has become—a company founded on hard work, resilience, and a commitment to excellence.

Joanne Bell
With over 3,000 clients and four practices, Joanne Bell has built Bells Accountants into a leading financial firm for businesses. Lydia Hill-Wood
As a Chartered Landscape Architect and founder of Hill-Wood & Co, Lydia Hill-Wood has spent nearly two decades shaping outdoor spaces. Coming from a background where ambition was encouraged, she has witnessed a shift towards more women in architecture, planning, and design.
“Times are changing and the female presence in the world of architecture and planning is truly pivotal.”
Lauren Wood
A skilled cabinet maker and winner of Channel 4’s Britain’s Best Woodworker, Lauren Wood has gained widespread recognition in the woodworking community. Now a presenter on BBC One’s Travelling Auctioneers, she uses her platform to promote woodworking and encourage more women to explore skilled trades.
“There is no such thing as a man’s job or a woman’s role. I’m proud to defy that out-of-date stereotype. The days of being the only girl on-site are far behind us.”

Amy Ruffell
An integral part of Early Birds, Amy Ruffell brings her exceptional customer service skills to the construction industry, ensuring seamless client experiences from enquiry to project completion. Her role as Office Administrator highlights the importance of operational excellence in trades, demonstrating how women contribute to the success and efficiency of the sector.

Alison Warner
As the UK’s leading business coach for the trades and construction industry, Alison Warner has been a driving force behind the success of many SMEs in the sector. Founder of Evolve and Grow Coaching, she has transformed businesses, dramatically increasing turnover while providing strategic guidance. Alison is also the author of How to Go from Tradesperson to Managing Director and a regular contributor to national media, making her a true advocate for growth and leadership in the industry.

Joy Zarine
Joy Zarine is a brand strategist and creative content creator who has worked closely with the Early Birds team for over four years. Author of bestselling books The Five Star Formula and Sales Through Service, Joy was raised with the belief that David could beat Goliath. Her mission is to change the world one brand at a time, championing small, independent businesses and empowering them to stand out among bigger competitors.
“International Women’s Day matters because it highlights that diversity and inclusion are far more than buzzwords—they’re essential ingredients for innovation, growth, and genuine business success. In my 22 years in business, I’ve consistently seen that workplaces where everyone can thrive naturally generate stronger ideas, richer perspectives, and ultimately, more resilient and successful businesses.”
