Garage conversion, Brenchley

The Brief

The project entailed the part conversion of an existing garage. The client desired a functional transformation of the garage space into a home gym and workshop while maintaining the aesthetic and historic integrity of the Grade II listed property. Key considerations included addressing the poor condition of the existing garage doors and ensuring that any new additions, such as roof lights, would not negatively impact the visual character of the property.

The Solution

To meet the client’s requirements, the project involved several targeted interventions. The deteriorating garage doors were replaced with new ones that matched the style and character of the original property. A blockwork partition wall was erected to retain part of the garage space. To enhance natural light and ventilation, two conservation roof lights were installed in the gym area and one in the workshop, all discretely positioned to preserve the building’s historical appearance. Additional modifications included creating new door openings, erecting stud walls for acoustic screening and storage, and blocking up an existing door while removing modern access stairs.

The Result

The garage conversion successfully created a versatile space that now functions as a home gym and workshop, reflecting the client’s needs and lifestyle. The careful selection and placement of new elements ensured that the aesthetic and historical value of the property remained intact. The introduction of natural light through conservation roof lights enhanced the usability and atmosphere of the new spaces. Overall, the project not only provided the client with additional functional areas but also preserved and respected the heritage of the listed building.
